2016 was a tops turvy year with many unexpected world events including Brexit, and the Trump election in the United States leaving many to wonder what is to come next? Here are our predictions for design trends in 2017 and how society, culture and the world economy will shape them.
Rise of Unisex – World famous athlete Bruce Jenner’s transformation into Caitlyn Jenner in a very public and widely broadcast process marked a turn point in how gender is treated and viewed. As the lines between what is female and what is male continue to blur the branding of products specifically to one sex or another will begin to morph as well.
I Am Woman Hear Me Roar – The backlash to sexual assault scandals ranging from Bill Cosby to Roger Ailes (Chairman of Fox News) to Donald Trump will create a ferocity in the women's liberation movement. Women tired of being looked upon and treated as sex objects will empower a new grittier and fiercer voice.
Product Experience Innovation - With so many new products flooding the market consumer will seek new ways to identify with brands and brands will have to try harder to stand out from the crowd. This will result in increased importance being placed on the product itself and innovation around the product form and brand experience.
Design Simplicity – As consumers are inundated with advertisements everywhere they look, from all of their digital devices, to bus shelters, subway ads, and billboards, messages and visuals bombard them from every direction. Scaled back, simplistic design, branding and messaging breaks through the chaos and offers a sense of pause and tranquility in the sea of mayhem.
